Best Time to Visit Oman

When to Go5 min read

Oman is a year-round destination, but the best time depends on where you want to go and what you want to do. The country has three distinct climate zones — the northern coast, the mountains and the southern Dhofar region — and they don't follow the same calendar.

October to April: the golden season

This is the best time for most of Oman. Daytime temperatures in Muscat, Nizwa and the desert sit between 22–30°C, with cool, clear evenings. It's ideal for wadi swimming, desert camping, hiking and sightseeing.

December and January are the busiest months — book camps and guides well ahead. The Muscat Festival (usually January–February) brings cultural performances, markets and fireworks to the capital.

May to September: heat in the north, monsoon in the south

Summer in northern Oman is hot — 40°C+ is common in Muscat and the interior, and the desert is best avoided in the middle of the day. That said, the mountains stay pleasant: Jebel Akhdar and Jabal Shams are 10–15°C cooler and make a wonderful summer escape.

Meanwhile, Salalah in the south transforms during the khareef (monsoon) from June to September. Mist rolls over green hills, waterfalls appear, and temperatures hover around 25°C. It's the only place in Arabia with a monsoon season, and it's magical.

Turtle season at Ras Al Jinz

Green turtles nest at Ras Al Jinz year-round, but the peak season is June to September, when hundreds of turtles come ashore each night. Hatchlings are most commonly seen about 50 days after nesting peaks.

Ramadan and public holidays

During Ramadan, eating and drinking in public during daylight hours is discouraged out of respect, and some restaurants close until sunset. Tourist hotels operate normally, and evenings come alive with iftar gatherings. Travel is still very possible — just plan sightseeing for mornings and late afternoons.

Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are family times: some attractions close for a day or two, but it's also a chance to see Oman at its most festive.

Our month-by-month summary

A quick reference for planning:

  • Nov–Mar: Perfect everywhere — peak season, book early
  • Apr & Oct: Warm but comfortable; great value and fewer crowds
  • May–Sep: Hot in the north; head to the mountains or Salalah's khareef
  • Jun–Sep: Peak turtle nesting at Ras Al Jinz
  • Ramadan (dates shift yearly): quieter days, festive nights
