Nizwa was Oman's capital in the 6th and 7th centuries and remains its cultural and religious heart. Its great fort, traditional souq and Friday goat market make it one of the most rewarding stops on any Oman itinerary.
What to See
Nizwa Fort, with its massive circular tower, dominates the town and offers panoramic views over the oasis and the Hajar Mountains. The adjoining souq is famous for silver khanjars, pottery, dates and spices.
On Friday mornings, the livestock market comes alive as farmers trade goats and cattle in a centuries-old tradition — arrive early to see it at its liveliest.

Practical Tips
Visit the fort and souq in the morning before the heat, and dress modestly in the old town. Nizwa pairs perfectly with a night in the mountains or a stop on the way to Wahiba Sands.
